Ashbourne Animal Welfare, registered charity number 1014249, is dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of stray and unwanted cats and dogs. We operate from our own purpose-built rescue centre - The Ark - near Ashbourne, in Derbyshire. All our residents have comfortable accommodation, receive the best of care and stay with us as long as is necessary to find a loving new home. We are an independent charity and receive no government or lottery help with the ever-increasing cost of our work, so we rely entirely for our income on our own efforts and on the generosity of the public.

We have monthly Open Days, when you are welcome to come and see what we do and visit our cats and dogs. At other times, visits to The Ark are by prior appointment.

Whether you are looking to adopt one of our residents, or see how you might be able to help us, or simply want to know more about us, welcome to our website and thank you for visiting.

APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEER DOG WALKERS (WEEK DAYS).

We are blessed with a good number of Volunteer Dog Walkers at weekends, but we are in need of more during the week.  So if you are over 16 years of age (most of our week day walkers are well past 16!), love dogs, enjoy walking and can spare 2 to 3 hours a week, every week, why not talk to us about becoming a volunteer. (We are also happy for college/university students to come along during the months of their summer break etc especially if they are interested in animals.)

Our dogs are walked twice a day, between 9.30am to 12.30pm and 2.30pm to 5.00pm.

There are 4 compounds where they can play off lead, a “Dog House” for quiet cuddles (with the dogs!) and plenty of paths around the grounds.  There are usually 18- 20 dogs to be walked and you may have to walk 4 to 6 dogs during your visit depending on how many other walkers have come, so you need to have a reasonable degree of fitness as some dogs can be boisterous and pull on the lead.  The walkers usually get together for a well-deserved cuppa and a chat after the session and we like to think of our regular volunteers as our friends.  I have been coming for almost 7 years and I’m addicted. It’s so rewarding bringing a little happiness into the lives of our rescued dogs and seeing them find new, loving homes.

If you are interested please phone me (Brenda) on 01629-534870 or The Ark 01335-300494 or come along to one of our Open Days.
